SEALING ARTWORK WITH RESIN - ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS

A very interesting post by Valorie Hunter, a member of the FB group FLUID ART ADDICTS.  Many artists seal their art with a coating of resin and Valorie has graciously shared several points and tips to help beginners avoid the same mistakes.  Other members of the group have also contributed to Valorie’s post with their own advice which we are sure all beginners will find very informative.

USING RESIN TO TOPCOAT ART

Valorie Hunter

So most of my paintings are sealed with resin because I embellish them with decals. I have struggled so much working with the stuff but have made some discoveries lately that I really wish someone had shared with me when I started, so I'm sharing in case even one person finds them helpful.

ACRYLIC POURING – PAINT CONSISTENCY CHART - UPDATED

UPDATED:  PAINT CONSISTENCY CHART

Following several requests, this article has been updated with a new paint consistency chart where the wording is more legible.  Kindly tag and share anyone you know who may need this chart.

CLICK on the chart to download.

PAINT CONSISTENCY

In acrylic pouring, consistency of paint is a key factor.  It is most important that one is using the correct consistency for the technique one is doing.  Regardless of how well you think you can eyeball it, testing your paint consistency is important to avoid disappointing results.

It is also important to keep in mind that a technique may also need different paint consistencies, in its makeup.  One example is the BLOOM technique, which has three different paint consistencies.  The pillow is the thickest, the paint is thinner than the pillow and the cell activator (CA) is the thinnest.

How to do a paint consistency test ??

Preferably use a glazed tile but you can also use cardboard, glass or any other material that you can hold up and the paint can run down without hindrance.

Put the same sized drop of each of your paint mixes across the top.  Hold it up.  All the colours should run the same, if not, adjust the ones that are running slow.  Test again and repeat until they all run the same.

ACRYLIC POURING: EASY BLOOMS FOR BEGINNERS

ACRYLIC POURING: KNOWING WHEN TO STOP

As in most abstract art, but most especially in acrylic pouring, sometimes it is difficult knowing when to stop.  At times we have to acknowledge that less is more.  It could be a hard lesson but most acrylic pouring artists have learned this through experiencing it hands on.  It is part of the learning curve.

Enjoy this beautiful video of a DUTCH POUR by CHRISTINE JESZECK of ‘Chris Jeszeck Fluid Art and More!’.  In this video Christine acknowledges that she should have stopped at one point but hindsight is what it is.  As Christine said, we win some, we lose some!

Acrylic Pouring Paint Calculator - Online Tool

Worried that you might not have enough paint for your pour, or maybe too much paint on your canvas ?  One of my favourite acrylic pouring artists, Olga Soby, has created the perfect tool for this – the online Acrylic Pouring Paint Calculator.

This tool calculates in inches and centimeters for rectangular, square and round canvases.  How cool is that !  Before using the calculator make sure to read the whole article which explains the different factors affecting the amount of paint needed, namely, the pouring technique you plan on doing, if you plan on applying a base layer and the consistency of the paint.

PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS

Here is some very practical advice from a fellow artist Donna Wesson Trull.  You can check out Donna's FB page here:

1. Want to save money on your pours?
2. Canvases piling up and you don't know what to do?
3. Don't have a lot of room for drying paintings?
4. Feel like giving up cause pouring isn't as easy as you thought it would be?
5. Why don't your pours look as good as everyone else's?

If this is you here's the answers to ALL your pouring problems. Yes I said ALL!
